Tips for Buying a Caravan
September 4, 2019
Caravans are a big purchase, but can give you years of enjoyment and special memories. There are a wide range of factors to consider to ensure you find a caravan that is comfortable, stylish, has the features you need and is within your budget. Below we look at some key considerations.
The Gross Combination Mass of Your Vehicle
Starting with the practical stuff, it is absolutely essential to know the Gross Combination Mass (GMC) of your vehicle. This determines how much you can tow and therefore, what size caravan you can get. Most late model vehicles today tend to have a GMC of 6,000kg or more. Older vehicles have a lower GMC. Find this out at the beginning to ensure you can tow safely.
What Size Caravan Do You Need?
Are you travelling by yourself, as a couple or an entire family? How long do you intend to go travelling for? The amount of people you need to accommodate and for how long is the main consideration when choosing a caravan size. Most people tend to think bigger is better for comfortable living, but keep in mind that you do a lot of your activities outside the caravan.
From cooking and eating to working and relaxing, most caravan owners do it all while enjoying the fresh air. It’s part of what makes caravan life great. Even when it is raining, you can sit under the awning. You really don’t need a huge caravan to live in comfort. The way space is utilised in smaller caravans is incredible. You should also keep in mind that the length of the van can limit where you can stay and get to. The shorter the caravan, the lighter it is and the better manoeuvrability you have.
What Features Do You Need?
This is once again up to your individual needs and how you want to use your caravan. Your needs will be different if you are going on short holidays to if you are travelling indefinitely. Obviously, working appliances are a must, but other essentials people might want include a washing machine, solar power, bike racks or bunk beds.
New or Used?
Whether to buy new or used usually comes down to what your budget is and what kind of caravan you want. You might be able to get a bigger caravan you want second hand that you might not have been able to afford if it was new. If you are buying used, ensure you go through a reputable dealer and get essential information such as:
- How old the caravan is
- Where it has been
- Where it’s kept (inside or outside?)
- Is there any rust?
- Is all the wiring and piping in good condition?
- Do the appliances work properly?
Buying from a private seller can be risky. Sometimes there may be problems the seller isn’t even aware of. Always take your time and do your due diligence. Of course, some wear and tear is normal. The important thing is that your safety is not compromised.
